The Cemetery Board was formed in 1996 and consists of 5 members. This Board was created in compliance with the Cemetery Act, when the Township of Pickle Lake took over the administration of the cemetery. Prior to the Township taking over, there were two cemeteries at the crest of the hill along Pickle Lake Road. They were combined and is now named the Pine Ridge Cemetery.
The Cemetery Board has a 10 year plan which they are using to further develop the area and to date, many improvements have been made. Future projects are also planned.
The mandate of the Cemetery Board is:
1) Plan and administer all development of the cemetery
2) Sell and maintain all lots and the grounds of the cemetery
3) Set the rules and regulations for movement within the cemetery
Thanks to our Cemetery Board and their vision, we have a much more beautiful area in which to place our family, friends and neighbours; as their final resting place.
Over the years the record keeping has been sketchy and today we are left with little knowledge of where the early burials were located, and the names of the persons buried there. This is so unfortunate, as all people deserve to be remembered.
The Anglican church had been burned in a rash of arson-related fires many years ago and the Catholic records consisted only of the names of the persons buried there, with no mention of the location of the burial. Today there are accurate records kept at the Municipal Office and burial lots have been surveyed so as to have an organized and orderly layout. This is in sharp contrast to the haphazard placement of burials, as was done for many years.
The By-Law # 97-06 was passed in 1997, which not only set the rules and regulations, but also the rates. Today the rates are being reviewed to reflect the rising costs. At the present, the Cemetery Board does not allow winter burials as there doesn’t seem to be an economical way of doing so in the loose sandy, gravel we have to dig in. The Board is exploring ways to do this that will not only be economical, but safe.
